Things to do Bars & Restaurants In and around Mazamet there are dozens of Bars and Restaurants to choose from. The nearest in the town centre are just two minutes walk from La Grande Maison, so no need to drive! Beaches The nearest beach is just 10 minutes away at the Lac du Montagnes. Mediterranean beaches are just an hour away. Bird Watching If bird watching is your pastime then the wide variety of natural habitats offers numerous opportunities to watch different species all within a few kilometres of La Grand Maison. You can also visit the Bird Zoo near Carcassonne. Bowling The nearest Bowling is just 12 km away in Castres. Canoeing Canoeing on the rivers of the Agout, Tarn, Thore and many others is as close as 12 km away. Cities to Visit Mazamet is superbly positioned to explore the Cities South West France, such as Carcassonne, Albi, Castres, Béziers, Foix, Gaillac, Millau, Montpellier, Narbonne, Perpignan, Revel, and Toulouse. Cycling The French are cycling fanatics and there are many wonderful cycling routes throughout the area as well as gentle leisure routes for the casual cyclist. In 2007 the Tour de France came to Mazamet, right in front of La Grande Maison. Fishing There are many rivers and lakes throughout the area and fishing is permitted all year round. Fish Licence required. Go Karting The nearest Go-karting is just 3 minutes drive away on the outskirts of Mazamet. Golf The Golf Course in Mazamet is ranked in the top 30 in Europe. There is a driving range and a superb restaurant. Non-members are welcome to come and play all year round. There are a further six courses all within an hour's driving. Horse Riding There are a number of Horse Riding Centres within a few minutes of Mazamet. Lessons cost from as little as €12 per hour (£8). Riders from the age of five are welcome. Ice Skating The nearest Ice Skating rink can be found just 12km away at Castres. Painting If you are an artist then you will be in your element enjoying the amazing and varied sceneries all within a short walk or drive from Mazamet and La Grande Maison. Pétanque Anytime, anyplace, anywhere. In every town and village there are areas and dedicated boule pistes as well as established clubs. Rallying The Annual Rallye Montagne Noire takes place every July / August. Rugby South West France is the home of Rugby Union in France. Two local teams, Castres Olympic & Toulouse play in the French Premiership well as the Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup. Shopping Mazamet has over 200 shops. Castres just 12km away is a large town with many more. Carcassonne larger still, just 50km away, but the best shopping can be found in the city of Toulouse which is just an hour away by car or direct train or bus. Skiing The nearest skiing is 75 minutes drive away at Formigueres - There are 17 pistes, 1 black, 7 red, 6 blue and 3 green. Ski lifts, snow park and a ski school. Swimming We have our own swimming pool. If you are looking for a water park then look no further than L’Archipel at Castres just 12km away. There is a beach and you can swim at the Lac du Montagne just 6km away and the Mediterranean beaches are an hour away. Tennis There are public Tennis Courts in both Mazamet and Castres. Theme Parks There are a number of Theme Parks all within an easy drive from Mazamet.
